Description
The bridge, designed & constructed by Sir WG Armstrong and Company Limited of Elswick, Newcastle was opened in 1876. At the time it was the largest swing bridge ever built. The bridge rotates to let ships sailing on the River Tyne to pass through. It's just one of many historic bridges spanning the River Tyne in Newcastle and Gateshead. Newcastle Castle and Cathedral spire can be seen in the background, along with the High Level Bridge designed by Robert Stephenson and built around 1848
