Description
This bridge, over the River Esk was built by Thomas Ferris in 1619 and is now a Grade II listed monument. It was built by Thomas after, as a poor man, he was unable to cross the swolen River Esk to bid farewell to the wealthy local girl he planned to marry. He returned, having made his fortune to marry the Squire's daughter and subsequently built the bridge so that no other lovers would be separated as they were. The bridge was popularised in a folk song by the lfolk singer Vin Garbutt.
