Artist's Description

This image gives and idea of how many man made structures occupy the area crossing the River Tyne in Newcastle upon Tyne. The High Level Bridge in the foreground was designed by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1849. The red Swing Bridge, which opens to let shipping through, was opened in 1876 and behind that is the famous Tyne Bridge which is used for the start of the Great North Run.This bridge was opened by King George V in 1928 and is now a recognised symbol of Tyneside.
